A Guide to Make Pour Over Coffee

The first pour is known as the bloom pour.
As it turns out, pour over coffee is a ritual. It is basically the Japanese way to make coffee. This is a simple method everyone can follow, but you have to be precise to get this cup of perfection the world of coffee lovers is talking about. For this, you must grind fresh coffee beans and then use a brewing system to pour hot water over the grounds.

Easy, right? All you need is freshly ground coffee, a filter, and a cool dripping mechanism or filter holder. You add water to the grounds slowly and making a thin line to extract the flavor from the ground beans, and it is all collected by your carafe. It is a one-cup-per-time process.

But you know that when it comes to brewing, specificity and measurement are key. It is definitely an art to master. When your coffee is brewing, it goes through three general phases widely defined as wetting, dissolution, and diffusion. If the ingredients your are using are fresh and you immediately combine them to make coffee directly to your cup, it results in a one of a kind beverage that will not have a fair comparison.

What makes pour over coffee so tasty

As a business owner, you probably take time to do some research to choose the right beans. You want to learn about their origin and roasting process, to make sure they are the best-quality products. Nevertheless, if you lack a technique to grind them properly, the taste can turn out insipid or bitter. Being said that, you need to master your barista’s abilities and invest in a good grinder. That is what will make pour over coffee so tasty.

For this matter, you have to be able to control the grind in order to be in charge of the timing. Remember that a great cup of coffee is only possible to prepare if you are aware of when to stop the grinding process and the brewing. It must happen at the perfect moment.

Now let’s talk about other possible outcomes.

On the one hand, if the grind is too coarse, it could produce larger coffee granules. The water will flow over them at a faster rate. It will make the coffee taste insipid. And on the other hand, if you go for a finer grind, much smaller granules will stop the water pass through easily. The liquid can last longer to get in the cup, and because of it, the coffee will taste bitter.

When planning to buy a grinder, you should go with a conical burr one. This type of machine creates grounds that are uniform in size and because of its shape, it can be manipulated with much more expertise.

And that’s it! It is a simple-ish process that helped this coffee became so popular.

But believe us when we tell you that mastering the making of pour over coffee is one of the greatest accomplishment that any soon-to-be coffee connoisseur dreams of. Here you have the step by step recipe:

Pour over coffee recipe

  • Boil one cup and a half of water.
  • Grind three tablespoons of Arabica coffee beans. Make sure to use 23 grams of beans for every 10 ounces of water.
  • Place a filter in the dripper.
  • Wet the filter with hot water before adding the coffee grounds.
  • Add the grounded coffee to the filter and tap it until the surface is uniform.
  • Place the brewer in a carafe or cup.
  • For just a few seconds pour water slowly over the coffee in a steady spiral towards the center of the grounds.
  • Stop and let it rest for 30 seconds.
  • You should do the pour over process four times with almost the same amount of water. With that in mind, you can measure how much water you must add each time.
  • For the fourth time, when water is dropping to the bottom of the filter, coming close to the level of the grounds, add the rest of the water using the same pouring method for 20 seconds.

The result is a refined cup of coffee thanks to a well-thought brewing method. This recipe is used for specialty coffee drinks. At Coffland Corp, we believe you can do it! Tips to Have the Best Café Customer Service

The best customer services tips for cafés.
Your customers are one of the most important factors in your café success, so treat them right!

This week we have been talking about a lot of ways and strategies to make sure you open your café or coffee shop successfully. From creating a killing menu to hiring the most professional staff members, now it is important for you to know a little bit more about customer service than just the obvious.

Experts in this matter suggest that main issue why so many businesses fail on customer service techniques is because most of them do not know what the differences between dealing with a customer and treating a guest are. These days, that approach is key to make your café way more attractive.

If your customer service is lacking, people will simply not return any more. There is not a big science behind that. So, when you treat them like guests and create a homey atmosphere, they will immediately imply that your place is sort of like someone they want to see again and again. They will develop a pleasant and ongoing relationship with your employees and products your offer, thanks to how warming the experience of drinking a cup of coffee at your business is.

Having said that, it is clear that you need staff members with the ability to build and nurture a continuing and profitable relationship with your café’ guests. That will get you a huge competitive advantage. Therefore, let them be talkative and motivate them to love your entrepreneurship as much as you do.

With that in mind you should coach your employees to perfect the following techniques:

Learn more about them

Yes, you should learn your regular customers’ first name. They will appreciate the fact that there is someone that ask them how was their day and know exactly what drink they like. Your guests will feel important among the rest, and statistics are highly surprising: according to a field study, 68% of people (which is a majority) that visit a café, leave because of perceived indifference. Pass this throughout your entire team, and you will see changes almost immediately.

Create a café loyalty program

Invest in printing loyalty cards in resistant materials to start a great program with which you can thank your regular clients. In the U.S this became a program that allows a retail business to gather data about its customers. For this to work, you should offer product’s discounts, coupons, points toward merchandise or some other reward. This strategy is one of the best when it comes to motivating people to choose your business instead of some other.

Paying attention to detail when serving food and drinks

A great customer service is all about getting into every detail. When serving food and drinks, please make sure plates and cups are clean. And because you run a café, always ask your clients in which temperature they like to drink their coffee. Also, have a sincere and friendly suggestion of the perfect food companions they can pair with their drink. Do not forget to ask, if everything is okay with their order.

Say yes, even if you have to use your imagination

Just say yes when your guests bring a problem to the table or have doubts. Most of the times you have to use your imagination. But it is not hard if you focus on what you can do for your customers as an alternative to the issue, instead of telling them what you cannot do first. For this, all your employees need to be on the same page, so they know what how they can collaborate in the matter.

These strategies are simple and will definitely make the working environment at your café more pleasant, because when your clients are having a good time and enjoy being there, the same will happen to your staff members. Be aware that you need to treat them with kindness, care, and discipline.

In the meantime, keep visiting our blog to deep into the process of becoming an entrepreneur in the world of coffee. If you think you are ready to make the next step, contact us at Coffland Corp to know about our services as specialty coffee providers from Colombia.

How to Hire the Most Professional Café Staff Members

Hire the perfect café staff.
The ability to hire awesome employees means that you know who will fit into your coffee shop culture.

There are a lot of good reasons why your café can be remembered: the quality of coffee, a great location, stylish interior design, and its signature drink. But among all of those, proper customer service will be essential for your clients wanting to keep visiting your place.

In one hand, your café staff members must be ready for the job. And on the other hand, you should know what the qualities you will evaluate to hire them are. They have to learn how your business works and manage their tasks efficiently.

But how can you be sure of that when you first meet them?

The key to having the best café staff

Before you rely on your new staff members to make ends meet, you should establish what are the specific functions and contributions of each one of them, for the café to operate efficiently. This means that, during the interview, you need to define the job descriptions with reasonable expectations and attainable boundaries.

If you do not have those definitions already, you may want to write down a procedural manual for each personnel, so they know when their responsibilities start and when they end. Being said that, as a business owner, you must be aware of work ethic policies and that you are dealing with people: they have feelings, hopes, and dreams.

The latter is vital to understand how to hire great employees. The most professional café staff members are easy to find when you are present in any grievances, stay firm, and are available anytime they need you. That is why you have to look for potential, significant willingness to learn and excellent social skills. Yes, in a sense, their professionalism depends on your ability to guide them.

Show them that you care, and do not forget to teach them everything you know about coffee. These days, everyone wants to be a coffee connoisseur, and your staff must learn about the business to be one step ahead of their customers. Remember that a café is a good place for a nice talk. It is more than okay to train your employees to start a conversation about coffee origins, and the importance of fair-trade and specialty coffee, for instance.

That is how this industry rolls!

So far, these are the key aspects you should consider to hire a professional café staff:

  • Establish specific functions and contributions.
  • Write down a procedural manual for each personnel.
  • Define work ethic and customer services policies.
  • Be firm, present, and available.
  • Look for and develop potential and excellent social skills.
  • Assess their knowledge of coffee and their willingness to learn.

These are the job positions you can offer:

  • Manager: a manager makes sure everyone else is offering high-quality customer service. He (or she) will be your right hand because he/she will be the person to train the staff and deal with several financial responsibilities.
  • Barista: this is the position for which you should demand more professionalism. You can even make a competition to hire the best. The barista you hire must be a specialist in making sure that each cup of coffee is perfect.
  • Marketing and administration teams: choose people with great ideas and the ability to be organized. In the world of coffee, the right business decision can give you the chance to be the owner of everyone’s favorite coffee place.
  • Cashier and waiters: these two have to be your nicest and most tolerant staff members. Make sure that they know how to take customers' payments and petitions fast, and as well as having the skills to balance the books at the close of the business day.
  • Other positions: if your place starts growing, you might need a greeter who opens the door for customers and makes them feel welcome. You can also hire people with artistic skills to throw private shows.

The list can go on, but what it is important for you to consider at this point is to hire passionate people with great work ethics. At Coffland Corp, we enjoy when we come up with ideas to help you start your journey as an entrepreneur in this industry. Feel free to contact us to know about our service as Colombian coffee providers!

Coffee Menu Ideas to Make Your Clients Want More!

How to create a menu for a coffee shop.
In your search for fresh and unique ideas, you should read menus for cafés or bars as well.

In previous posts, we talk about what drinks and companions to pair them with you can offer at your coffee shop to please everyone’s cravings. This is because having a killing coffee menu is all about making your clients want more.

Although you might have the best coffee, delicious snacks, and talented baristas, there is more at convincing your customers than how good your products are. As a business owner, you must know some selling strategies. If you already have created the beverages and food options, now it is time to use your creativity to make an awesome design.

In this competitive market you need to stand out from your competition, so get rid off all those traditional booklets, and those very flat and simple sheets of paper that bores us all. Being said that, take note of what you can do to speak to your clients through your menu, so they can feel they are buying a quality product, and a great experience.

Great ideas for a coffee menu

In order to design a coffee menu that will make your clients want more, it is necessary to think outside the box and doing your best to make it look like a piece of art. Here you can have a hint of what we are talking about:

Change the format

You can use a blackboard or even two pieces of wood to make a statement menu. You can even make it digital by having a QR code. Change the format and people will remember your place forever, so play with different materials, textures and coffee aromas if necessary!

Talk to them

Don’t you love when you are reading a menu and all of the sudden you feel like it is a person talking to you in there? Well, the way you write on your coffee menu will represent the overall character of your business. You can make it sound funny, classy, or funky, but what you have to make sure is to be likable and friendly.

Use pictures

Add some photos of your coffee offers and food. For this, you should invest in the service of a professional photographer. By using pictures of your amazing products you will be helping your clients make a decision, and also you will insert in their minds the other options you have so they wish to come back for more.

Describe the drinks

These days, there are more people asking about ingredients than ever. New generations know what they want but also like to try new things. Pay attention to detail and play with different fonts and colors so they can read in stages.

Talk about coffee origins

As we mentioned before, when it comes to the new generation of customers, the more they know, the better. Keep them informed, especially about your coffee origins. For your menu, you can add a section in which you explain the type of coffee beans you use, where they come from, and what makes it unique.

Have an additional menu

Yes, you should also have an additional menu for a special occasion. It can be a seasonal menu. How could you transform what you offer right now into a wintry feel? Can your menu become a summary?

If you apply these recommendations, your clients will not hesitate whether your coffee options are worthy or not. Being said that, do not forget to take your customers to the hall of fame of the most-asked coffees at your place, with those so-called signature drinks. At Coffland Corp, we love to create content that could encourage you to become the best entrepreneur you can be. How to Green Up Your Coffee Shop for Good!

How to green up your coffee shop.
Learn the quickest, easiest and most effective way to minimize wastes!

Being eco-friendly is one of the most popular policies in new entrepreneurship. These days it is called “ecopreneurist” and all about finding strategies to help your business go green. Now, if you want to pursue a green coffee shop, keep reading this article to find out how to do it.

Firstly, the biggest source of environmental damage where coffee is concerned comes during the production of the beans. That is why at Coffland Corp, we embrace a fair-trade coffee policy through which we make sure every farmer applies agricultural techniques to preserve the land and its biodiversity.

And if you are thinking about saving some money, luckily your business can get a tax credit for specific energy-saving investments, in a variety of forms. Greening up your business building can also get you a tax deduction for your expenses. Have you ever put that into consideration?

You will be using that money on some other investment. Future generations will thank you for supporting this almost unwritten policies. A green coffee shop is a good selling point, particularly for young adults and teenagers that appreciate a business when it gives them the change to reduce their carbon footprint.

Now, take notes of all these simples steps you can follow to create an eco-friendly business experience for your coffee shop.

Fair-trade coffee

Small businesses in the coffee industry have chosen to launch their brand with transparency. That is what fair-trade coffee is all about because the organizations, and small businesses behind it, have strict standards when it comes to sustainable agricultural practices. Choose labels that respect this matter.

Offer vegan alternatives

Animal-source food can have a negative impact on the environment. This is known for factory farms of dairy products. So much so that a great vast of them had to switch to non-dairy alternatives, such as almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, and rice milk. Your business carbon footprint will reduce to almost 250% of the CO2 per day that will probably produce someone who does not pursue a vegan diet.

Having reusable spoons and cups

As we mentioned in a previous post last week, you can make your coffee business plastic free by having reusable spoons and cups. Selling reusable cups can turn out as a very profitable idea and a good decision for the wellbeing of the environment. Just imagine how much damage represent those single-use cups that are being thrown away each year. It makes up for an estimated of 14.4 million units. And remember to also replace stirring rods with metallic spoons.

Change your lighting

For your coffee shop to go green, you have to switch to LED lighting. But even if they do cost a bit more than regular lighting, they last longer and reduce your electricity monthly bills. These bulbs are up to 80% more efficient than traditional lighting. But how this helps the environment? Well, less energy use reduces the demand for power plants and decreases greenhouse gas emissions.

Did you think you have to make big renovations to your place? Having a green coffee shop is about small solutions to get bigger results. At Coffland Corp, we love to inspire you to become a greater version of your entrepreneur self, or shall we say ecopreneur? Anyways! Keep visiting our blog to get more info regarding this matter and contact us if you want us to be your fair-trade coffee providers.

Is Britain Drinking More Coffee than Tea?

Coffee consumption in Great Britain.
Britain's favorite drink is under threat as tea consumption falls 19% since 2010.

Rumor has it Britain people are changing their most famous culture over coffee. The truth is, tea parties are not as popular as Queen Elizabeth may think. Drinking coffee in Britain is not a weird thing to do these days because the British are consuming twice as much coffee as tea. Most coffee lovers did see this coming!

But why pick coffee?

According to the Daily Mail, tea consumption falls between 10% to 19% every year since 2010. And in a survey made by Monin, -a business that makes syrups for coffee- has found that 61% of British people prefer drinking coffee over tea. In this last study, lattes are the most popular drink, followed by the cappuccino, americano, and then mocha.

Apparently, this is happening due to the way coffee is served and its compounds. In one hand, 46% said they prefer coffee because of caffeine: it wakes them up in the morning on the way to work. And on the other hand, 39% said they needed it as a pick-me-up during the day.
If you think those are the only reasons, the majority of the ones surveyed explain that they just consider the taste of coffee is better than tea's. That accounts for 65% of them.

And what about tea?

The new generation of consumers has a busier life than the previous ones. That is why British pastimes are losing its luster. The consumption of coffee has tripled since the early 1970s, and it is not going to change just yet.

Even though the U.K. has one of the most celebrated tea drinking cultures in the world, a Mintel report found that consumers associate standard tea with tradition, which it is boring for them. Again, what younger people want is to break the mold and start over their own traditions.

Drinking tea has become an occasional habit, but is not a daily must. Despite the trends, it is not like tea is going to disappear. As a beverage, it is going to be served in a much more attractive way, as it happened in America, where cold tea and delicious recipes and combinations have a strong niche in the food industry.

Whether it is a irony or not that British are drinking more coffee and Americans now include tea in their coffee shops, at Coffland Corp, we know that having a business in the coffee industry can guarantee you instant success. If you are thinking of becoming an entrepreneur, you can contact us when searching for provider! Meanwhile, keep visiting our blog for more useful info!

Coffee is changing Britain's culture.
Britain stands out because it is the only market where coffee consumption, away from home, has grown in the past five years.
