Britain's favorite drink is under threat as tea consumption falls 19% since 2010. |
Rumor has it Britain people are changing their most famous culture over coffee. The truth is, tea parties are not as popular as Queen Elizabeth may think. Drinking coffee in Britain is not a weird thing to do these days because the British are consuming twice as much coffee as tea. Most coffee lovers did see this coming!
But why pick coffee?
According to the Daily Mail, tea consumption falls between 10% to 19% every year since 2010. And in a survey made by Monin, -a business that makes syrups for coffee- has found that 61% of British people prefer drinking coffee over tea. In this last study, lattes are the most popular drink, followed by the cappuccino, americano, and then mocha.
Apparently, this is happening due to the way coffee is served and its compounds. In one hand, 46% said they prefer coffee because of caffeine: it wakes them up in the morning on the way to work. And on the other hand, 39% said they needed it as a pick-me-up during the day.
If you think those are the only reasons, the majority of the ones surveyed explain that they just consider the taste of coffee is better than tea's. That accounts for 65% of them.
And what about tea?
The new generation of consumers has a busier life than the previous ones. That is why British pastimes are losing its luster. The consumption of coffee has tripled since the early 1970s, and it is not going to change just yet.
Even though the U.K. has one of the most celebrated tea drinking cultures in the world, a Mintel report found that consumers associate standard tea with tradition, which it is boring for them. Again, what younger people want is to break the mold and start over their own traditions.
Drinking tea has become an occasional habit, but is not a daily must. Despite the trends, it is not like tea is going to disappear. As a beverage, it is going to be served in a much more attractive way, as it happened in America, where cold tea and delicious recipes and combinations have a strong niche in the food industry.
