Most Common Mistakes When Storing Coffee

Learn how to store coffee to maintain its freshness
Storing coffee will maintain the freshness and the flavors of the beans

Having a business in the food industry requires strict protocols in order to preserve the flavors and to ensure its wellbeing for your clients. When it comes to storing coffee, many believe in myths and end up damaging the beans or grounded product’s properties and unique flavors.

Coffee is a product that can go stale easily under the wrong conditions. Could you imagine losing a big investment for your restaurant, cafĂ©, or coffee house due to misconceived ideas of storing? The best option is always a dry, airtight container to maintain maximum freshness and a balanced taste between bitter and sweet. But regularly, people don’t follow this rules. Want to know the biggest mistakes you might be making?

Mistakes to avoid when storing coffee

Air, moisture, heat, and light are your coffee biggest enemies. Stop following wrong practices and improve your storage methods! It’s important for you to understand that ground coffee goes stale much faster, which means that your coffee might start losing its properties as soon its package its opened. Keep reading to learn how you can avoid storage mistakes!

Exposure to extreme temperature

The reason this in on top of the list is because most people believe that the best way to store coffee is by keeping it in the refrigerator. When the grounds or the beans are exposed to low temperature, its oils start deteriorating. Fridges are moist, and coffee easily absorbs moisture, odors, and tastes around it. Also, if you store it with a little bit of oxygen, it will suffer freezer burn.

Direct sunlight

With direct sunlight, coffee fades both in appearance and taste. For that reason, you should keep your beans in a dark and cool location. Make sure the storage is also dry and clean. As it was mentioned before, coffee can absorb other flavors around it. Have a space in your business exclusively to coffee storage. Avoid glass containers for usable beans, despite how difficult it is not to show off your precious beans.

Oxygen

Exposure to oxygen despite being in a dry, dark and clean environment will contribute to staling the coffee faster than it should. It will lose its freshness because natural oils can dry out, so keep it in sealed containers. It’s a good idea to invest in proper coffee storage containers, that release CO2, and other gases while keeping oxygen out.

Buying to much

One mistake that caught people off guard is buying way too much coffee. Based on your experience you should know how much you need weekly, and monthly. You should stick to that number! If you cross that delicate line and overstock the coffee, it would not matter how appropriate your storing methods might be; the coffee will go stale because time will do the job of damaging your beans.

Using the same package once it’s opened

Once open, using its own package is not ideal for long-term storage, as it’s exposed to oxygen. Containers with airtight gaskets are the best option! When it comes to materials, opaque glass or plastic are enough. But if all you have are clear containers, remember to keep them in the dark.  Maybe in your pantry!

Proper Coffee Storage Techniques

Did you know that storage methods change the flavor?

Coffee is one of the most consumed drinks in the world. A high percentage of homes have at least one method of brewing and consume at least one cup per day. But for businesses and home brewers, one of the most important things is to keep beans and grinds fresh. The reason for this is that the strength and particular qualities about coffee beans are directly related to their conservation. To enjoy a good cup of coffee every time, you’ll need to follow these tips to store it properly!

Coffee is a perishable good: its porous structure allows air and scent particles to impregnate the bean after it’s roasted, absorbing any flavor and depriving it of certain chemical flavor characteristics. This is not the only element that affects coffee beans: temperature also plays a key role in the aging process of coffee. While many decide to freeze their coffee, the process of lowering the temperature makes the beans release their oils and expands the cellular structure of the bean. More so, in the unfreezing process, the moisture generated by the change of temperature alters the flavor significantly, “watering it down”.

That being said, how do you store your coffee properly? Here’s a handy list you can implement to have perfect cups every single time!

  • Buy exactly what you need: Don’t store coffee for long periods of time, especially when you have the whole beans. Use it fresh, with no more than a few days to consume it all. This will ensure better flavor and less chance of spoiling it.

  • Use airtight containers: Air is the number one enemy of coffee beans. It can infuse non desired flavors to your beans and age them faster. If you use recently roasted beans, invest in bags and containers with air release valves.

  • Store away from direct sunlight: Some people prefer to store their coffee in glass containers (doesn’t generate odors and such), these are better stored away from the light. This will reduce the aging time of the coffee beans and grinds.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures: Heat and cold are damaging to the coffee. As you surely know, temperature influences the flavor of each cup, and an overheated or cold grind will brew bitter or mild coffee.

Once you know how to store your coffee properly, all you need to do is to acquire the beans to produce perfect cups every time. With Coffland Corp you can do this: create a private label, or simply transform your business by acquiring their professionally designed blends.
