There are many options for you to try beyond sugar |
If your resolution for the new year is to be healthier, this doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice a good and sweet cup of coffee. Sugar is an ingredient almost essential in every drink, but its substitutes are getting more popular among, basically, everyone.
While it’s more than fine to have a beverage sweeten with sugar every now and then, doctors recommend to find a balance, especially if you want to prevent gaining weight and cavities. Instead of using artificial sweeteners that do not contain sufficient nutrients, it’s better to add to your coffee a natural alternative that offers health benefits.
Consuming coffee helps the body in many ways. With time, the organism improves its alertness, the concentration, and burst with energy. Also, it contributes to lower the incidence of diabetes type 2 and heart disease, only if you drink it black, most of the time. That being said, it doesn’t mean everyone should give up all the recipes and delicious variations.
Sugar-free ingredients to sweeten your coffee
Every sugar-free option will incorporate a different flavor to your beverage, but of course, if you are giving up sugar, you will adapt easily as long as it tastes sweet. Here is a list of the most recommended ingredients.
Coconut cream
A lactose-free drink is not that bad either. Coconut cream not only will add a fantastic beachy aroma but will sweeten your coffee. Although it won’t thick and lights the coffee as good as regular milk does, most people consider that its flavor outweighs the look of it. Before using it in your recipe, it must be well stirred.
Maple syrup
Pure maple syrup contains 14 antioxidant compounds which studies confirm it has anti-diabetic, anti-cancer and anti-bacterial properties. For your coffee, you should add just one teaspoon because by not being artificial it has an intense flavor. In case you don’t find the syrup, try using natural honey instead.
Almond milk
This is probably the favorite sugar-free substitute out there. Almond milk not only is exquisite but has a significant amount of protein, and you will live without the need of counting those calories. It’s also higher in calcium which is good for your bones and teeth. As a nutty-taste alternative, you can incorporate to your recipe cashew milk too.
Cinnamon
This ingredient will cut the strong sour taste and will give a spicy yet sweet flavor to the beverage. Cinnamon must be add when brewing the coffee. For every four tablespoons of coffee grounds, you will need one teaspoon of cinnamon.
Stevia
Of course, not the artificial one. Stevia is a native plant from Latin America and is a natural sweetener by excellence. Studies had shown that it’s up to 300 times sweeter than table sugar; so if you purchase a 100% pure stevia extract that contains zero calories, remember you only need a little amount to do the job.
