Coffee Flavor Wheel: What Is It?

These are all identified inside the Coffee Flavor Wheel.

Flavors in a cup of coffee can have incredible varieties. Depending on millions of small changes and facts, you can experience something incredibly different from cup to cup. The range of flavors varies immensely depending on the origin, roast, grind, brew, and other subtle differences that play a role in the process of coffee fabrication. So, how do you learn what are the subtle flavors varieties in coffee? Someone created a handy method to do that: the coffee flavor wheel.

Back in 1995, coffee specialists paired up to create it, and it has become one of the must-have for coffee experts. Organizations and individuals worked hand in hand to create something amazing: a tool to explore and identify the flavor characteristics of coffee.

The coffee flavor wheel became one of the must-have for all coffee lovers, and for a good reason: with it, anyone that was interested, could learn the subtle nuances of the coffee flavors when using it. While it might seem a simplistic approach to a complex subject, the reality is that with a coffee flavor wheel, most people with enough knowledge can get to experience coffee differently.

The way of using it is fairly simple: you must pay attention to your senses. While at first, it might not seem like a simple feat, learning how to identify flavors in your cup can take you a long way down the road.

Expert baristas and coffee connoisseurs use it amongst themselves to ‘calibrate’, which means determining an overall flavor profile for a product through cupping. This is done for several reasons: to establish a unique pattern for a store, as an example. Or to create a product in an industrially matter. Regardless of the final use, the reality is that people use the coffee flavor wheel as an invaluable tool for their work.

A few years ago, the relatively new World Coffee Research and more experienced Specialty Coffee Association of America worked on an update, but the idea was the same. It took them  three years to create the newest version, and while working with a scientific organization, coffee experts and other expert associates, identified and perfected the old flavor wheel to create a more accurate alternative for coffee lovers. It changes slightly in comparison with the previous one, but still quite similar in use while providing a more detailed information guide.

Do you want to participate in the coffee world? Then this is your chance! While you might not want to use a coffee flavor wheel at first, you should learn about it because that’s the guide for most roasters and producers in the world. People like Coffland Corp use it to create perfect profile flavors for their clients and to identify the characteristics that make their products unique.
