How Coffee Helps the Digestive System

Besides the morning boost coffee gives us, it can help us after we had a meal.
For years, coffee has been a trusty companion for meals. Whether consumed when you feel particularly full or to spend more time with someone you like, coffee is almost a constant in most after-meal chats. Some people even get together in a coffee shop to enjoy some pastries and a smoking cup. Why have we related this industry with after meals, and why is there a unique relationship between a healthy digestion and coffee? The secret is simple. In fact, coffee is great for your tummy! But, why and how? That’s what we’re going to talk about today.

Yes, your stomach gets a kick after you drink coffee. And there’s a good reason behind this. A significant percentage of people consume their coffee hot, and as you surely know, these cups are packed with caffeine. The former always cause a rumble, as the liquids and meals consumed with a temperature superior to the body’s physiological (37.5°C) always make your intestines to move and work. A variety of factors causes this sudden increase in activity: the rise in temperature forces your body to lower it to one that does not affect the rest of the body, and this increases the intestinal movements, improving the digestion.

You know another thing that has that same stimulant effect? Caffeine! As you surely know, this component is a powerful nervous stimulant, and the “up and running” feeling it generates in your brain, right after your steaming cup, is strongly related to the way your tummy reacts to it. The peristaltic movements (the ones that help meals pass from one part of the intestines to the other) are potentiated by the consumption of coffee, helping you digest everything better. This, however, does not mean that you need to drink extra liquids. Caffeine is also a diuretic and a potent detox chemical, and while it helps your body get rid of some toxins, it can dehydrate you.

However, this does not mean you should rally in a binge consumption of coffee: everything has a measure. A small cup after your meals should be enough to reap the benefits, without turning it into a problem. The excessive consumption of coffee can be detrimental to your health too, as the excess of caffeine and the diuretic effects can cause stomach disturbance. And you only want to have the benefits!

Meals and coffee have been combined for quite some time now. Now you know how coffee improves your digestive processes, added to its fantastic taste, you’ll probably want it in every aspect of your life.
