People Are Asking For Sustainable Coffee More Than Ever Before

How conscious are the new coffee consumers?
Sustainable coffee is grown in a manner that is kind to the environment.

The coffee industry has an ethical responsibility these days, primarily due to climate change's effects in the landscapes used to harvest coffee. So, when it comes to sustainability, we have to think on “the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” as it was established in the United Nations development goals’ agenda.

We are more than aware that coffee is everyone’s favorite drink! The world needs it, and we have to preserve it!

Thankfully, people are asking for sustainable coffee more than ever before, and it is because customers now are conscious of how climate can affect everything they love and believe in. Studies have shown people want to drink sustainably produced coffee for the right reasons. It has also shown that most of them are millennials!

Have you ever considered this fact to create your business strategies? Keep reading to see the bigger picture, so you can be prepared to please this new demand!

A process that cares about the environment

In Coffland Corp, we aim for fair-trade coffee, which is a policy we follow to ensure that our grounds and beans are produced in a way that is profitable to the hard-working farmers and their families. Also to the beautiful mountains in Colombia, including their precious biodiversity.

To sum up, sustainability in this matter is an every-stage practice that helps us preserve our environment and ensure it thrives for generations to come. Here is how it works:

  • Little to no pollution: farmers need assistance, understanding which fertilizers to apply to their crops and when. We encourage them to use organic and natural products.
  • Renewable resources: we re-use as many resources as we can. Generally by recycling water containers and adding any vegetal remains of the coffee plants into composts to ensure a fertile land.
  • Working conditions: farmers need to be treated fairly so that they can work with proper care and motivation. We know that by doing it, we are not only helping their families and the local economy but ensuring they will want to maintain the job.
  • Sustainability knowledge: besides of those mentioned above, farmers are vital for us to be truthful to fair trade policies. And we aim to educate them on this matter. They learn about reducing soil acidity, depletion, and carbon footprint of a cup of coffee, also to improve the efficiency of water used and the resilience to climate change.
  • Coffee business owners: this element here depends on you! Now, when it comes to coffee shops and so, we always recommend using biodegradable cups, because they make a big difference to the amount of garbage that ends up in a landfill. You can also have a compost to show your clientele the level of environmental consciousness your business has. It is also a good idea to invest in furniture made out of recycled materials.

Why people support it

According to Nielsen’s global online study, millennials are more willing to pay extra for sustainable offerings, that is why they prefer companies who are committed to helping decrease the environmental impact. This engagement is spreading around the world, to the point that three out of four young adults choose brands that establish a reputation for serving green coffee. Also, the survey showed a rise in the teenager's percentage respondents, also known as Generation Z.
